Monolid Eyelining Guide – Find What’s Suitable!

May 30, 2009

If you have been following my makeup posts, you’ll notice my eyeliner is usually done in this style, with varying thickness and flicks at the end.

Anna Sui Doll 044 by you.

Thick, vibrant, unblended, and always black eyeliner, no browns, no grays. Somewhat Egyptian style-ish. I swear I won’t do the pursed lip thing again, make me look like lala wannabe. T.T

I have tried various methods of lining my single eyelids but unfortunately, not much suits my eyes. They simply don’t bring out my features.

But first, let’s take a look at my type of monolid.
As you can see, I have virtually no crease, inside out, nada. Some people HAVE a crease but are folded deep inside; some don’t. So you really must experiment to see what suits yourself!

akonana date 006 by you.

It can occassionally fold up to a double eyelid too, which is freaking annoying and can hamper my makeup, making me look big-small eyed.

Ok I really hate it when that happens. Sibeh unnatural and not ‘me’.

As everyone of us is unique, we need to spend some time to find a style that suits you. What works for others may not suit you. So play around and have fun searching!

Monolid girls should also note that not all the rule of thumb in eye makeup will suit you. (Makeup has no rules actually – screw those ‘rule of thumbs’!)

This guide ought to show you how to gradually try each of the common methods, and make you find out WHAT actually rocks on your eyes, and what doesn’t.

Majolica Majorca Lash Expander Frame Plus Mascara Review

March 12, 2009

Say hello to my latest impulse buy.

Majolica Majorca Lash Expander Frame Plus. The third generation of this ever famous line. Use the coil side to frame your eyes for an eyeliner effect. Jet black fiber helps to lengthen your lashes dramatically. Gosh, I actually remembered part of the description. Why can’t I do so in exams? -_-

The two-faced mascara wand:

  • Number 1 is a coil-shaped side for you to coat your lashes with the mascara formula to ‘frame eyes’ and give off an eyeliner-like effect.
  • Number 2 is for you to comb the formula smoothly to coat each lashes to lengthen and separate them.

It has jet black fibers that dramatically lengthens all your lashes, 50% more than their famous Lash Gorgeous Wing mascara. Citation needed?

Here is my eye without no makeup whatsoever. I know I virtually have no bottom eyelashes at all. *Sigh* I curled my lashes with RMK’s Eyelash Curler. Nice huh? They were stick straight before curling.

After applying 1 layer of MJ mascara…

I like it pretty much for three reasons:

  • It stayed put no matter how much sebum or tears you produce. No smudge, no flaking. And not a pain to remove with any oil-based makeup remover, eg. Loreal Gentle Eye Makeup Remover. Fasio has exactly the same characteristics but was a mighty pain to remove. (Fasio FAILS. It’s like using permanent marker on your skin and lashes!) Olive oil doesn’t remove this properly, to my disappointment.
  • It holds the curls forever, never drooping even after you have a teary-eyed session. If you have stick-straight lashes like moi, you’ll bound to love this characteristic.
  • Lengthens. But I’m not fussed about this, because I have learned that the only true length that I can get for monolid / stick-straight lashes is from the use of falsies.
  • Frames the eyes due to it’s jet black formula. But for me, the ‘eyeliner’ effect might be due to the staining on the eyelids when applying the mascara LOL.
  • The fibers are very lightweight and do not weigh down lashes at all nor cause any flaking.

Two coats of mascara here plus eyeliner. W00t the lashes are indeed separated individually!!!!!1

Here is the side view of how lengthening it is. Monolid eyes tend to have fatty (read: heavier) eyelids so it’s important to find a mascara that holds curls else your eyelids will only weigh your lashes down.

Tips to remember during application:

  • When I was patting on the mascara formula using the coil side, the fiber always gets into my eyes. So have a Q-tip ready for this.
  • It is best to have a spoolie ready when you’re applying this as it’s easy to coat on too much formula, causing clumps.
  • Wipe off excess formula with a tissue before applying as this tends to be pretty wet.
  • The formula needs to ‘warm up’ to activate the fiber for easier application. How do you do this? Grasp the bottle in your hand, open it up and stir gently for a few minutes.

My verdict?

A great mascara engineered truly for Asian people. I have met with lots of fantastic mascara formulations. The formula is great, but either (1) the wand sucks, (2) does not retain curls well, (3) not suitable for Malaysian climate. But this delivered what it promised to do. Knowing that Majolica Majorca is a sister company of Shiseido, ever famous for their concentration of the Asian market, you can be sure that they deliver things that are suitable for us Asian ladies.

Pros: Waterproof, sebumproof, holds curls superbly.
Neutral: Lengthens pretty decently but doesn’t impress me like falsies do.
Cons: Compared to other brands of mascara like Estee Lauder, Dior, Anna Sui, etc, this mascara needs a wee bit of tugging to remove even with an oil-based remover. Virtually impossible to remove with yummy olive oil.

Bf is right. Woman’s money is the easiest to cheat. Blame it on the packaging. Not pink but definitely girly with a twist. Retailed for RM39.90 at Watsons for their introduction promotion which has already ended. Normal price is RM53.90. This sells out terribly fast, so you ladies better have your battle gears ready! 🙂

Makeup Review: Thank Goodness for Daiso Eyeliner Coat!

March 4, 2009

Does your eyeliner smudge on you no matter how much you invest on getting good quality items? Fret no more! I have something great to recommend! RM5 nia too!

I was in Mid Valley with the bf yesterday for a movie and some good food. Being the vain pot I was, I caked on my beloved eyeliner before I stepped outta the door. I had the following on my eyes:

  • Estee Lauder eyeshadow palette
  • Majolica Majorca Lash Expander Frame Plus (the latest mascara in MM’s famous line)
  • Revlon Colorstay Liquid Liner

Eyeshadow, mascara and liquid liner – All the essentials that a girl needs, unfortunately cursed by the fact that if not well taken care of, it’ll smudge make you look like a panda.

But thank God, thank goodness for Daiso. The Daiso Eyeliner Coat, I mean. This works like the infamous Benefit Shelaq. Why go for overpriced Benefit Shelaq when you have good old Daiso from Japan?

It looks like any typical liquid liner packaging except its packed with some liquid wax that seals off your eyeliner, making it waterproof, smudgeproof and long-lasting. w00t!

Being the eyeliner freak I was, I decided to put this to test using all the eyeliners I have.

To the left, to the left, all the things pencil drawn on the left.

This baby has a very very fine brush tip that you can drag smoothly across your liner.

I let it sink in a little, and started rubbing. The way you would when you rub your eyes.

It’s apparent that this seal does not do well to make pencil eyeliners long-lasting. It worked wonderfully for liquid and gel liners though. I’m astounded that MAC Powerpoint liner goes off so easily. MAC wor, so lousy wan.

And if that isn’t enough to satisfy you, let me guarantee this thing is waterproof. Which translates to tearproof to me too.

Yes, I test my eyeliners like that. Sot leh.

And they’re all intact, as shown in the picture, although a bit washed out for all the pencil eyeliners.

Verdict? Daiso Eyeliner Coat is a Godsend. At only RM5, it managed to seal off my eyeliner properly all day long, even for a girl who tears easily like me. I tend to tear whenever I yawn so my lower lashline liner ALWAYS smudges, no thanks to my hyperactive sebum glands too. But not with this! Imagine the joy when I saw this on sale. Say goodbye to Benefit’s Shelaq, ladies. Daiso is located at The Curve, Damansara, near Nichii Fashion City. 🙂

And I think you have one last burning question: Does this wash off easily?

Answer: Yes.

I used Loreal’s Gentle Eye and Lips Makeup Remover and glided gently once.

All the pencil liners were off except for Revlon and Bobbi Brown liners, which stayed put and still vibrant. But it didn’t take lots of tugging to get it off, so no worries.

Revlon Colorstay Liquid Liner / Bobbi Brown Long-Wearing Gel Liner + Daiso Eyeliner Coat = Indestructible eyeliner that lasts you FOREVER!

Now THAT, I call a holy grail item.

PASS! Go get it, ladies, and never shall you fret about having eyeliner smudge on you no more!

Monolid Makeup Look: So Much I Wish to Write, But…

January 19, 2009

I don’t have a fucking camera and I hate showing sub par pictures for the world to see. All except for those LOL funny webcam pictures of course.

Here’s one plus an optional pus-filled pimple for you. That sucker spurted so much blood on my mirror and I ended up cleaning up again. Le sigh.

Monolid makeup info: Subtle cats eyes. Nice? 🙂 I really wish to come up with tutorials, but seeing my phone translate the colors so inaccurately is a big turn off. Imagine purple eyeshadow becoming grey after taking a picture. I. Simply. Can’t. Stand. This. Shit.

Santa apparently didn’t hear my Christmas wish, sigh sigh. 😦

Kthxbai. Hopefully I can get some decent pics from the bf’s camera soon, his computer broke down and I’m feeling so -_- from the lacking of seeing a good picture!!!!!!!!!!! Wtfness…

Monolid Makeup Tip: A Different Usage for the Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick

January 8, 2009

Monolid girls might face some confusion when attempting to do nude eye makeup look. In fashion magazines or websites, it ALWAYS states that you should use a matte brown eyeshadow with no shimmers at all to shade some dimension into your eyes.

But I found out, based on my experience, that it’s a bad advice, but correct to a certain extent.

Why is it bad advice?
Monolid girls do not have a pair of deep set eyes with plenty of width for shading purposes. Our eyes are pretty flat, unlike double eyelid girls, you see. So if you cake on brown eyeshadow, it might look (1) you got beaten up or (2) your whole eyeshadow simply looks dirty.

But it’s somewhat correct, you need brown tones to shade monolids!
Aha! This is the fun part. It’s about choosing the right shade of brown, girls. And it’s not all about matte browns. We need to aim for something subtle yet gives dimension. For this purpose, I think I’ve found a holy grail.

The Bobbi Brown Bronze Shimmer Brick.

The hues are so so so subtle, with extremely minute shimmers that reflect light just beautifully. As background info, BB Bronze Shimmer Brick is used as an overall face illuminator, much like MAC’s Mineralized Skin Finish. So using it as an eyeshadow in pretty much a second (self-invented) option.

You see, there are 5 shades in the brick, and the colors are properly separated, much unlike MAC’s baked MSF. Which leaves you with 5 perfectly lovely eyeshadow shades to create a nude look! 😀

These subtle little shimmers give dimension to your eyes, much unlike the matte brown I have swatched on the right. Can tell? 😀

The dark brown falls flat IMHO. Bobbi Brown’s shimmers are just very very subtle yet make all the difference in the world.

Swatches of the shades – I tell you, these swatches don’t do the color justice. It’s lovely!

If you feel that it’s on the frosty side judging from the pictures, I can tell you they’re not at all. Trust me! Go to a Bobbi Brown counter and check out the shimmer brick yourself! 😀

I shall follow up this post with a FOTD soon when I have an outing and have a chance to makeup, because I think this picture doesn’t show much of the eye makeup. Don’t look at my pimples please! LOL.

PS: My friend say I look like a ?? with the fringe. -_- I know, I know, paired with eyeliner-less monolid eyes, I look like the typical China mui. -.-

I am so glad I didn’t buy MAC’s Mineralized Skin Finish. My sister-in-law has a Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in her stash and I picked it up. Lesson: Dig through your female elder siblings / cousins / relatives makeup stash. Especially those who never love all these but like to buy impulsively! Kakakakaka…

Good night! 😀

I am going to SINGAPORE. :D See my makeup stash for the trip.

December 21, 2008

I’ve sorta finished packing all my vanity.

My skin care:

L-R: Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base, Shiseido Pureness Deep Cleansing Foam, Shiseido Pureness Moisturizer, Shu Uemura cleansing oil disguised as Shiseido, and finally, Simple toner disguised as Shiseido. Wtf? XD

My eye makeup:

In no particular order, Prorance eyeshadow in P17, Anna Sui eye color, Clinique Color Surge Eyeshadow in Strawberry Fudge, Pure Luxe Kaleidoscope collection, Bobbi Brown lipstick and Estee Lauder lipgloss. W00t.

And which one of you should I bring? *ponders*

L-R: Estee Lauder, Chanel, Estee Lauder, Diorshow, Lancome, Kate mascara base

Ah yes, I’m all done packing. 😀

Oh wait…

I haven’t freaking packed my clothes! Wtfness… I have officially become a makeup-holic. Makeup first clothes later. -_- From the above pictures, can you tell? I’m a cheapstake, all also using sample size. XD

Ha ha, no lah. Gotta be wise when you spend money on makeup. Mascaras can’t last, why buy a full sized one when you can fish for GWP sizes? That way, you get more variety, innit? 😀 Eyeshadows? Prorance cheap, Clinique is sample size, Pure Luxe cost RM9 nia, Anna Sui, Estee Lauder lip gloss and Bobbi Brown lipstick I steal from my sister-in-law. Cost her a bomb, cost me nothing. XD She never uses them anyway; I can’t stand seeing them lying around waiting to expire. So they’re sorta mine now. 😛

Will update during the trip when possible due to the awesomeness of ze’ Asus Eeepc. Departing 23rd December. Have a very Merry Christmas dear readers. 🙂

Officially my first travel trip with the boyfriend. Can’t you tell, the chaborkia is super excited about the trip. 😀 I miss mommy, though. No one beats her for the best shopping mate award. ;_;

My Cosmetic Warehouse Sales Makeup Haul!!!!! :D

December 19, 2008

My mom has always refrained me from participating in overwhelmingly crowded warehouse sales or unbelievable bargains done by so-called ‘branded’ shops. I finally know why. My mom, is a woman of dignity. Buy what you can afford, she says, why hog the place looking for cheap branded stuff treated like trash? Good old branded items thrown out to the hungry flock like worthless rubbish, I grimace at the thought of that. >.<

Yet, at the same time, I was glad that my girl friend invited me to go to the warehouse sale located at Wisma UOA today. I think I’ve found a winner mascara people! 😀 And bear in mind, it’s UOA, not UOB. We made a detour to OSK/UOB Building just because of that damned alphabet. -_- But the crowd is just too overwhelming. I guess this will be the last time you’ll find me hogging these places. -_-

And, not to mention the dirty sides of warehouse sales. You see lots of uncivilized people opening up the tubes, squeezing them on their filthy hands, stuffing their noses into the item to smell, sticking their fingers in to test the cream, and so on. Gross, isn’t it? Why buy stuff that has been repeatedly raped probed by people?

Argh, I know I’m slapping my own mouth because I was one of the people picking on unwanted trash.

Anyway, here’s my haul.

I got:

– Diorshow Blackout
– Exceptionnel de Chanel
– Clinique blusher in Precious Posy (a lovely pink shade with golden shimmers)
– Clinique eyeshadow in Strawberry Fudge (light pink shade with shimmers and brown as a highlight color)

Lancome Maquicake UV Perfect Forever is FAIL because I think I’ve gotten the old batch who has easily breaking / cracking issues, as per my research here (see post #320) . FYI, if you’re one of those unlucky people who got the older batch, you can approach your nearest Lancome counter to get an exchange.

When I brought it home, I expect compact powders to have strong staying powder and not crumble all over the place. The thing is, I was taking a sling bag and there wasn’t impact. HOW LAH CAN A COMPACT POWDER CRACK just because of my walking beat?!!!!!!! I am not a god damn elephant leh! I don’t stampede, I walk! *Screams*

METROJAYA, you suck actually. Yes, these cosmetic warehouse sales are usually organized by MJ. Why are you selling all these GWP (Gift with Purchases) when they’re supposed to be given out to customers who spent so much money on you? I really dunno the source of these items, honestly. Curiosity got the better of me and I ignored my mother’s wisdom and went to this sort of sale. BUT I’m still glad I did because I think I found a winning mascara without costing a bomb. Ooooh, twice I mentioned liao wor. 😉

Now the question is, WHICH is the winning mascara? Stay tuned people! 🙂

Monolid Tip: Ayumi Hamasaki’s Eyes are About to Drop off OMG!

December 11, 2008

Girl eye big big very innocent hor?

Oh lookie there! Big big eyes and long lustrous eyelashes! Isn’t that every girls’ dreams? So dear readers, are most of you envious of those alien dove-like eyes, or are you disgusted by the uber fake look?

Hmmm, for me, I’m definitely not a big fan of that type of look. But it’s funny how everyone seems to be finding all sorts of ways to achieve the big-eyed look. It’s okay to a certain extent, but when you go for desperate measures just to get that, or you think that’s the ‘way’ you should look, that’s gross.

Her eyes are god damn scary to me. Looks like they’re about to drop out.

But I duplicated her look anyway. Just for the LULZ.

My attempt on the ‘squint’ and failing miserably. I look so sleepy! Must be the dead weight anchoring on my eyelid skin.

And I didn’t like it. Hmmm, on second thought, maybe this would be a lovely look for night time outings, but how many times do I get to go out at night lol. I’m not a party animal. XD

Anyway, this post is not about my dislike of Ayumi Hamasaki for god damn leading a cult of fake big-eyed girls. I just plainly wanna illustrate my point whereby you can achieve any look you want by using the right tools.

For monolid girls seeking the look above, all you need is just two pairs of false eyelashes and intense black eyeliner. I used a China made false eyelashes for the top and Inuovi’s false eyelashes for the bottom. Revlon Color Stay Liquid Liner as usual, it’s my drugstore holy grail eyeliner. 😉

Yes, you’ve seen this pair of eyes. It was featured in my previous post lol.

Putting on the bottom false eyelashes dramatically enhances the size of your eyes and again, gives monolid girls a little bit of the catty look that everyone loves and deems ‘sexy’. The key is at the outer edges of the eyes. False eyelashes are curly and long, thus making your eyes look longer and sharper. Works wonders for those with droopy eyes. Good thing innit? 😀

A side by side comparison on the difference that you can achieve just by using the ‘right tools’.

So really, don’t fret about why God gave you the less common monolid. Try and find way to work it, gal. Because, you’re worth it. And I mean it. I’m in no way affliated to L’oreal yeah. 😛

Meanwhile, I think I’ll just stick with my good old normal look. It’s about enhancement, not going for the extreme.

Eyeliner plus upper false eyelashes will do for now. 🙂

Good night beautiful ladies! 😀

Tip for Monolid Makeup: Know your own eyes!

December 7, 2008

A few weeks back I was pretty busy and only used my fingers to do my eye makeup. Unsurprisingly, it turned out pretty bad and out of proportion. Which is then I realized the importance of getting your own eye structure right. Right, as in my own context and opinion. If got better opinion do share girls! 😀

And that is when I’ve also realized the importance of a good brush. No one but yourself can actually FEEL the difference I tell you.

So anyway, I wanted to share my little opinion in finding out exactly where to apply your eyeliner eyeshadow. Because we cannot see our eye socket as obviously as double eyelid girls, there is virtually not much guide for you to see where the makeup goes. If it’s hard for yourself to see the socket, it’s even harder for people to notice your eye structure.

Here’s a little diagram I’ve cooked up. And my graphics tablet breaking down, didn’t really help in the process. -.- Sorry for the noob picture.

That’s right. Trace the outer V by yourself. Example picture~

Just a simple look that I concocted for a shopping day out. 😀 Lower false eyelashes were for, urm, research reasons. XD

How to do this?

Trace your eyeshadow outwards, following your lower eye line. This works really well to compliment your eyes. Plus, it gives off a slightly cat eye look. Sexy much? 😛

I didn’t really have a guide for myself because my eyes were very de flat. Cannot be helped, it’s my mother’s gift. AFAIK everyone’s eyes, regardless of single or double lidded, are different, so work around and see what works best for yourself. 😉

Any questions? I will be happy to help! 😀

Next off, I will show you guys how false eyelashes can really OPEN up your eyes. I swear, Ayumi Hamasaki is the scariest alien I have seen on earth.

FOTD: I Has A Christmas Frog on ze’ Shoulder.

December 2, 2008

What better way to start off your posts with a vain picture of yourself? In this case, because I’m cranky with lack of sleep, let me appetize you with my flat-chested Garfield pajama picture.

Okay okay. I just want to share my FOTD, but have no whatsoever good leading sentence to begin with, lol.

My look is so subtle, the colors just ain’t striking. But what better way to make a classy statement of yourself by using Estee Lauder’s High Gloss Ultra Brilliance lipgloss? 02 Ivory is an extremely nude shade that does not wash you out yet gives you outstanding glow. Item courtesy of our family’s new dishwasher member.

PS: If you’re squealing to know how the hell did I get that ‘double’ eyelid, lemme tell you. Don’t sleep tonight. Tomorrow you will have all the double, trip, quadruples of eyelids that you ever begged for. (For those ungrateful buggers who whine about their natural born beauty XD)

For my barely visible eyes hidden under my fringe, I used:

Kate Mascara Base
Anna Sui Long Mascara
Bobbi Brown Long Wearing Gel Liner
Eyeshadow : First, I applied a layer of Prorance eyeshadow in P17 (Gold), topped up Pure Luxe’s minerals in Carousel, then on the outer lid, I shadded the crease very very lightly with Clinique’s Sparkling Sage. Remember, eyeliner comes last if you want a well-defined eye for monolids. Opting for a day look? Don’t go waaaaay too thick for the eyeliner since it’s not the main attraction, unlike the one that a MAC artist did on me.

See the eyeliner? Subtle yet makes all the difference in the world.

You can hardly see the eyeshadow colors, but trust me, it’s there. Looks very sweet and baby-ish. Subtle pink and greens often reminds me of babies, where they use light shades to decorate baby’s clothes, etc. Cute hor?! 😀

And on a totally unrelated note, I had that frog on my shoulder during my span in Pavilion on a shopping trip. Tee hee. How many chances you get to purchase an overpriced doll from Parkson anyways? 😉

Ladies, if you love my look, do tell me by dropping me a comment okay? 😀
